Niketana
Residential Vipassana meditation
courses in this tradition have been held in the Adelaide area
since the mid 1980's in rented facilities. Initially they
were held in Mylor and for several years in Normanville, south
of Adelaide. Courses are now being held at the TocH Camp in
Victor Harbour (location map).
Over time the old students (meditators
who have completed at least one 10 day course in this technique)
formed the South Australian Vipassana Meditation Association
in 1998.
The Association would like to build a meditation
centre for holding residential courses so that people in South
Australia can more easily learn and grow in this technique.
Courses and facilities are funded solely
by donations from meditators who have completed at least one
10 day course; all Vipassana work is done entirely on a voluntary
basis.
In 1999 a number of old students provided
interest-free loans and donations for the Association to purchase
a house in Northfield in Adelaide. The principal teacher,
Mr SN Goenka, named it Dhamma Niketana, which means 'Dhamma
House' or 'Dwelling Place of Dhamma'.
The property is not suitable for ten-day
residential courses because of its small size. However, shorter
courses as well as weekly group meditation sittings are held
for old students.
Meditators can live at the house to deepen
their meditative practice and to provide service so that others
may benefit from this technique.
Recently a shed in the back yard was renovated
into a meditation hall to provide a good atmosphere for meditation
and to better utilise the limited space.
Occasionally there are open days where the
public is invited to see the house and learn more information
about Vipassana meditation. Also screenings of introductory
videos can be arranged on request. |
